I created the original Provider, pictured on the left, from a worn shoe sole. The award plaque shape pays homage to those who provide emotional and financial support to those in need and the worn shoe sole is a testimonial to the countless hours such commitments often require.
I thought Provider was a simple, complete statement, but the piece elicited questionning responses from studio visitors and at times required explanation. Recently I decided to add a collar of sewn and glued one dollar bills.
I realize the introduction of currency narrows the focus of this piece to those who provide financial support, but the original work was inspired by the financial crisis of 2008 when so many, including my husband, lost their jobs and spent months pounding the pavement looking for ways to support their families. So, for now, I salute the men and women who provide for families and loved ones, realizing the many additional ways people provide will inspire me to create additional work exploring this theme.
